Fear Index Goes Vertical

The markets don’t like Congress voting down the Bailout!

The Volatility Index, AKA The Fear Index, just broke its all-time high of 45.74 set in 1998. It topped out at 48.40 (up 31% ). Markets are churnin’ -n- burnin’.

Things had calmed down last week after the Fear Index spiked at 42 the afternoon of Sept 18.

The historic low (market complacency) is 9.31 on Dec 22, 1993, the high (markets most nervous) was 45.74 Oct 8, 1998. The last time it closed below 10 was Jan 24, 2007 (9.89).
